How to add footnote without messing up numbers

Change the view back Print Layout ( View tab > Print Layout).

Click the XВ at the far right of the Footnotes mini window to close it.

Place your cursor at the end of separator line, then press DeleteВ to remove the empty paragraph below.

Now you can see the separator and the empty paragraph:.

Change the Footnotes setting from All FootnotesВ to Footnote Separator.

A mini Footnotes window opens at the bottom of the page:.

Once youвЂ™re in Draft view, go to the References tab then click Show Notes.

Now you return to the Merge Documents dialog box, please (1) order these documents by Move Up and Move Down buttons (2) specify a break between documents from the Break between documents drop down list and then (3) click the Merge button.

The footnote separator line and the empty paragraph are styled as вЂNormalвЂ™, so if youвЂ™ve adjusted the paragraphВ spacing (leading)В above and/or below in the style, you may get way more space than you need, as shown in the screenshotВ below. If you'd rather have symbols instead of numbers, want the footnotes to appear below the text instead of at the bottom of the page, or want the numbering to start at a different number, you can change this from the 'Footnote and Endnote' window. When you insert a footnote in Word ( References tab > Insert Footnote), by default it gets added toВ the bottom of the page along withВ a short line and an empty paragraph to separate it from the body of the text.
